The muscle power of COMSOL

Lars Mehnen (FH Technikum Wien), Irene Reichl (VSC Research Center, 
EuroCC Austria), and Sebastian Frank (TU Wien, EuroCC Austria) present simulated FES (functional electro stimulation) — a simulated muscle fibre contraction due to an electric impulse.

FES leads to the contraction of the biceps while the triceps is mechanically working against. The respective physiology is implemented in the finite element method code COMSOL Multiphysics accounting for processes on the ionic and molecular level. The model used in the presentation was developed in the master thesis of Sandro Silvio Spitzer and run on the Vienna Scientific Cluster.
