Türkiye: Empowering female experts in manufacturing

It is rare that a High-performance computing event is majority female. Last Friday, when we welcomed a Turkish delegation from the project “Developing Women Empowerment Models in the Manufacturing Industry” to Austrian Scientific Computing (ASC), nine of the fifteen participants were women – and the energy in the room felt different in the best possible way. We were especially pleased to be joined by Austrian representatives from the Federation of Austrian Industries and the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs alongside our Turkish guests.

The project “Developing Women Empowerment Models in the Manufacturing IndVisitustry” is implemented by UNDP Türkiye together with the Türkiye İşveren Sendikaları Konfederasyonu / Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK) and the Ministry of Industry and Technology. It is funded by the #EuropeanUnion. The project works with companies in Türkiye’s manufacturing sector to train women for new, digital and green roles on the shop floor and in engineering.

As part of our programme at ASC, we introduced the delegation to the local HPC systems and highlighted projects in which female HPC experts have used our systems for cutting‑edge #research. We also presented our HPC training centre, which is recognised across Europe for its high‑quality, practice‑oriented training programmes, before our colleagues led a technical tour of our supercomputers #VSC‑4, #VSC‑5 and our newest system, #MUSICA (Multi‑site Computer Austria).

It was inspiring to see how strongly this group connected around both technology and shared experience. We left with new contacts, an open invitation to Istanbul and a clear sense that this is not the end of a single visit, but the beginning of a longer‑term collaboration.
